Not even a year ago it was quite shocking for some to see the Colorado Avalanche organization implementing social media as a means of promotion. Starting with a Facebook page and a Twitter account, fans began wondering if they’d ever see an Avalanche player take on a social media role.

There has been much debate as to the status of unfortunate Colorado Avalanche forward Tomas Fleischmann. Many have reported that he hasn’t been medically cleared to resume playing hockey, which in turn has hindered his negotiations with the Avalanche.

Last year, with nearly a month to go before the 2010 Entry Draft, the Colorado Avalanche announced the signings of what they believed to be two key parts of their rebuilding plan. On the same day, both enforcer David Koci and goaltender Peter Budaj re-signed with the team.

Except for a minor league swap with fellow cellar dwellers, the Edmonton Oilers, the Colorado Avalanche were surprisingly resolute in their silence on the trade front today.

While this may appear as a flip flop to my previous defense of Colorado Avalanche head coach Joe Sacco, I will admit that I struck that position merely to counter the spreading opinion that he may be the real problem in Denver. That said, it is starting to appear like a lot of the trouble that this team is having could be the result of the guy in charge night after night.

Well, I sure saw this coming from a mile away. Craig Anderson, who displayed many different signs of frustration over the last few months, was traded to the Ottawa Senators for Brian Elliott this morning. On the surface, the Avalanche get a well-rounded and technically sound butterfly goaltender with a strong work ethic and an upbeat attitude. The Senators get a big goaltender with the ability to be a solid workhorse, meaning he could fetch a decent contract to be their starter next season.

The Colorado Avalanche are all about setting records in 2011. So far they’ve set the franchise record for the longest running losing streak -currently at eight games – and the record for most goals allowed in a single game, dropping a 9-1 disaster of a hockey match to the Calgary Flames.
