The Avalanche Guild To Shut Down
Apr 19th
| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: THE AVALANCHE GUILD IS SHUTTING ITS DOORS
Denver, CO – With the 2011-12 Colorado Avalanche season under wraps and after a historic year of coverage, The Avalanche Guild will be officially shutting down production effective immediately.
Since the 2007-08 season, The Avalanche Guild has successfully advanced and enhanced the local adult hockey community through a wide variety of interactive events, including the patented After-Hours program, the Battle for the Banner Shootout Tournament, viewing parties, and numerous discount ticket programs.
More recently, The Avalanche Guild partnered with a grassroots fan campaign, The Burgundy Brigade, in an effort to unite adult Colorado Avalanche fans in a single, unstoppable group. Hosting Burgundy Brigade Game of the Month offers, the two groups proudly brought together passionate Avalanche fans in a loud but welcome environment to cheer their favorite team at Pepsi Center.
With time increasingly devoured by his dedication to all things goalies, independent pro goalie scout and The Hockey Guild founder Justin Goldman made the decision to commit 100-percent of his time to his scouting career. After dedicating more than eight years to the local hockey scene through his work as editor-in-chief of the Colorado Hockey Insider (2003-2007) and then as the owner and founder of The Avalanche Guild, his efforts will now be focused on his three goaltending projects: The Goalie Guild, GoaliePost, and writing weekly articles for NHL.com.
“The Avalanche Guild is a project I’m extremely proud of,” Goldman said. “I was honored to have had the opportunity to work side-by-side with the Avalanche to promote the team, and to host interactive events on Pepsi Center ice. I was fortunate to have their support, and I can’t thank them enough for that. So many adult hockey players had memorable on-ice experiences due to their support of our programs, and from the first year until this very day, every event we ran was successful. Now the Avs have more interactive and discount ticket programs than ever before, and I am proud to have been a part of their fan development since the 2007-08 season.”
In 2008, Goldman was hired by Mile High Sports Radio (AM 1510) to co-host radio shows dedicated to covering the Avalanche. He was the co-host of Avalanche PostGame for the 2008-09 season, and then a co-host alongside Mike Haynes and Derek Armstrong for Avalanche Weekly, which aired once a week during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
As Goldman’s commitment to scouting goaltenders grew over the past two seasons, the role of running The Avalanche Guild became a full-time responsibility for Content Manager Ryan Boulding. Boulding cut his teeth covering the Colorado Avalanche for his own website, The Burgundy Blog, before being acquired by The Avalanche Guild in November, 2010.
“I’m proud of the time I put into The Avalanche Guild and the impact that it has had within the Colorado Avalanche community as well as the hockey nation,” said Boulding. “We’ve managed to help unite a segmented group of Avalanche fans and the act itself was more rewarding than the outcome. While I’m sad that the site is closing, I look forward to continuing to provide coverage of the Avs and to connecting with hockey fans around the world.”
During his time with the site, Boulding saw record traffic increase year over year while providing news, analysis, and opinion for two seasons. He co-founded a sporadic-at-best podcast, Two Guys 1 Puck, which brought an auditory assault of sports talk to the content heavy Guild site and featured a few guests, including Adrian Dater of The Denver Post.
Boulding also developed a healthy relationship with local powerhouse Mile High Sports, providing biweekly coverage of Denver’s local NHL team which will continue into next season and will spill over into the locally renowned Mile High Sports Magazine as well as other outlets.

After Hours Game #4 Recap
Nov 8th
Prior to the Avalanche’s 5-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday, Nov. 8, two adult hockey teams comprised of friends and employees from Dry Dock Brewing company hit the ice for the fourth After-Hours game of the season.
Owned and operated by Kevin DeLange, who also captains a hockey team in the Rocky Mountain Hockey League (RMHL), Dry Dock Brewery is a small pub located in Aurora off of Hampden road. They are the only microbrewery in Aurora and hands-down one of the best, as they have won numerous annual awards for their tasty brews.
As you can see, Kevin and his crew had an awesome time on Pepsi Center ice before the Avs game, as the two teams battled to another shootout that ended in a 5-4 victory for the Spitting Camels.
Be sure to watch the video, as Kevin invites all of you to check out Dry Dock Brewery and even gives you a free brew on the house if you mention this video! A special thanks to Kevin and his boys for being a great After-Hours group!
After-Hours Game #2 Recap
Oct 24th
The Vail Mountaineers adult hockey club made the long trek down to Denver last night to catch what turned out to be one of the most bizzare Avalanche games of the season in a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Like all of our After-Hours teams, the boys took advantage of a great Guild discount on tickets and in return for their support, they received a rare opportunity to hit Pepsi Center ice following the game for an hour of shinny, Vail style.
Here’s an interview we shot with Gary Defina, the captain of the Vail crew. Gary is also a coach for Battle Mountain High School’s hockey team, so he’s well-connected in the Vail hockey community and a great guy with some great stories. He’s a big supporter of The Hockey Guild and The Avalanche Guild, so we thank Gary for his passion and are proud to have him be a part of the exclusive After-Hours club!
As a way of saying thanks to Gary’s crew for their support, we granted him two free shootout teams in our third-annual Battle for the Banner Colorado Avalanche Shootout Tournament, which takes place every March right on Pepsi Center ice. The tournament brings together shootout teams comprised of players that participated in After-Hours games throughout the year. The two teams that advance to the final shootout game actually play the championship on Pepsi Center ice during intermission of an Avalanche home game!
If your adult (or youth) hockey team is interested in setting up one of our exclusive Avalanche Guild events, just contact us at info@thehockeyguild.com and we will do our best to make it happen!

After Hours Welcome Letter
Aug 5th
On behalf of the Colorado Avalanche and The Avalanche Guild, we would like to welcome you all to our third season of Avalanche After Hours games. We have a lot of great benefits planned for Year #3, including more options and opportunities to play on NHL ice at Pepsi Center!
Some of you are already quite familiar with the After Hours program, yet others have only heard about the experience from players on other teams. For those that are unfamiliar with this exclusive on-ice program, our official welcome letter will give you some basic information on how it works and what you can expect in the coming months as we prepare for the 2009-10 season. Click to download and then learn more by clicking on the After Hours tab at the top.
An After Hours game takes place either before or after an Avalanche home game. You and your teammates will literally play a hockey game on Pepsi Center ice, while also attending the game at a great group discount. Everything from the jumbotron and PA announcer to the locker rooms, your team is a part of a real game on real NHL ice!!
We are proud to offer available games for both pre and post-game ice, so now you have more opportunities to sign up for your own After Hours game. Remember, it doesn’t just have to be for your hockey team. It can be for your business or co-workers, a group outing with your hockey friends and family or just a good ol’ game of shinny with the weekly drop-in crew. Regardless of your playing level or ability, you’re welcome to play in our After Hours program.
And yes, we’re still giving away FREE team entries for our third-annual “Battle for the Banner” shootout tournament, coming in March 2010.
