The latest in the greatest Avalanche Guild podcast in the Guild is done, on the books, and now online for your listening pleasure.

Not ones to beat around the bush, the dudes tackle the most pressing question on the tips of everyone’s tongues. The question few have dared to ask: Is Milan Hejduk past his prime and does he need to retire?

Not to be outdone there, the discussion turns to the missing person known as Matt Duchene and whether or not Paul Stastny is worth his money. All that glitters is not gold, and Justin Goldman comes aboard the TG1P vessel to discuss tendies Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere and their collective and individual merits.

Naturally, as you’ve all been waiting to hear, there is talk about renewing Joe Sacco’s contract and how none of the guys agree with the rumored decision.

Good News! Two Guys 1 Puck is back after a decent, life changing hiatus.

Hockey talk abounds in the latest episode, starting with the news that young center Matt Duchene is injured… again. What is the team to do? Who will step up in his spot? Jonathon and Ryan discuss the options.

They also transition into trade talk, discussing the electrical surge that is Steve Downie and his fabulous arrival in Denver. Was he worth letting the loudmouth Kyle Quincey go? Find out.

He isn’t the only new guy in the system though. There was plenty to talk about between Jamie McGInn, Mike Connolly, and Michael Sgarbossa. Justin Goldman also joined in, giving The Goalie Guild perspective on the stellar netminding of Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

This week, the gents discussed the Colorado Avalanche’s inability to play well at home and how struggling to find their game early on is hindering their performance. There is also some discussion surrounding a recent article about the failure of the Avalanche’s dump and chase system. From here, the guys break down the roster, analyzing who should play where and why Matt Duchene needs to be a permanent left winger.

TJ Galiardi and Kevin Porter also find their names in the conversation, as a potentially healthy Brandon Yip and Peter Mueller bring up certain questions about line pairings. An unexpected change in direction finds the talk shift to the future of Joe Sacco and Greg Sherman in Colorado and local fans are called out for not providing enough support to their most favorite of teams.

TG1P wouldn’t be complete with some talk of the madmen in the crease, and, joined by Justin Goldman, there is talk of playing Semyon Varlamov vs. Jean-Sebastien Giguere against the Pittsburgh Penguins and whether or not Ryan Miller is at fault for getting steamrolled by Milan Lucic.

All of these questions are contained in and largely answered in this weeks episode of Two Guys 1 Puck. Featuring Ryan, Jonathon, Kevin and special guest Justin Goldman, TG1P-EP9 takes a look at the past two weeks of Colorado Avalanche hockey. The guys examine the Avalanche’s inability to win at home while also discussing opinions on who deserves to be the captain of Colorado and why Erik Johnson is no longer on the list for consideration.

The Matt Duchene Experiment is also discussed at length, as is whether or not TJ Galiardi deserves to be centering his own line. Is that too much responsibility? Probably. Of course there is talk of both Semyon Varlamov and Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Justin even mentions the upcoming slate of goaltenders.

Unfortunately, because of an unknown head injury, Peter Mueller is as absent in the conversation of this podcast as he is on the ice for the Avalanche.

The latest in The Avalanche Guild podcast series, Two Guys 1 Puck tackles the season thus far.

Ryan, Jonathon, and Kevin were at it again this week, talking about the Colorado Avalanche franchise record success on the recent five game road swing and the disappointing loss at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks in the first of a home and home series. Bolstered by outstanding goaltending, yet again, from Semyon Varalmov, the Avs were still outplayed by a rolling Hawks club.

The guys also delve into the Joe Sacco situation, discussing his propensity for sending messages to players, including Matt Duchene, and Sacco’s inability to make adjustments to bring his team back into a game.

Ovbiously not all sunshine and rainbows, the Peter Mueller debacle is discussed at length, with the debate turning towards head shots in general and whether or not the Shannanban is working.

Finally, what would a TG1P be without a little netminder nitpicking from the man himself, Justin Goldman. Varlamov, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, and Corey Crawford are just a few of the guys who made the final cut. Goldman’s scouts Crawford so the Colorado Avalanche know how to beat him.

The preseason is over and opening night in Denver is on the horizon. With just a Puck Drop between Colorado Avalanche fans and Peter Forsberg retirement night, it is the perfect time to catch up on camp and the preseason with the latest episode of our podcast.

Last week we posted two different audio interviews from the Colorado Avalanche rookie development camp. The first was from prospective defenseman Stefan Elliott. The second was from Elliott’s natural defensive partner Duncan Siemens.

Justin Goldman wasn’t done with just them though, as he was obviously at camp to check out the goalies in the Avalanche system. Unable to speak with Sami Aittokallio due to the lack of a Finnish translator, Justin was limited to chatting with the other three netminders at camp: Calvin Pickard, Kent Patterson, and Kieran Millan.

Goldman went on to elaborate on his conversation in a post over on his independent goalie scouting site, The Goalie Guild.

For Pickard, I focused our short interview around his impressive durability. As you’ll hear, I consider him the epitome of a major-junior workhorse since he faces a higher volume of shots and starts than almost every other CHL goaltender…

For Millan and Patterson, I focused our interview on revealing the importance of education with two high-level NCAA goaltenders. Please note that Patterson answers questions first, so that you can distinguish between the two puck stoppers.

Independent goalie scout and Avalanche Weekly host Justin Goldman made it out to the Colorado Avalanche rookie development camp today, scouting mainly goaltenders. He did however have a chance to catch up with a few of the others players who made it out to Denver.

At 6 feet tall and 192 pounds, 18-year-old prospective defenseman Duncan Siemens is a big kid. He’s also a tough kid and one that knows how to find the back of the net when he has the chance. Siemens, who managed 43 points, 121 penalty minutes and a plus-40 rating across 72 regular season games, was ranked 10th amongst North American skaters by Central Scouting Services in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and was the defensive partner of Stefan Elliott while with the Saskatoon Blades. Much like his favorite player, Scott Stevens, Semens prefers a physical game and has been compared to Chris Pronger.

Siemens is also on the hunt for a place on the roster and joined Elliott as one of Goldman’s non-goalie interviews today.

“You know I’m going to come into camp and put everything I have on the ice and leave that decision to the coaches… and whatever happens, happens.”

Independent goalie scout and Avalanche Weekly host Justin Goldman made it out to the Colorado Avalanche rookie development camp today, scouting mainly goaltenders. He did however have a chance to catch up with a few of the others players who made it out to Denver.

Twenty-year old defenseman Stefan Elliott is a big name at camp this season as he was favored to serve the Avalanche after a very strong training camp and pre-season showing last year. He didn’t manage crack the lineup though and spent the rest of the season with his Saskatoon Blades. There he finished with an outstanding 81 points in 71 games and went a whopping plus-62. Did I mention already that he’s a defenseman? Elliott went on to add eight points in 10 playoff games before joining the Lake Erie Monsters in their playoff push, adding two helpers in five games for them.

If there is a defensive vacancy on the roster this season, Elliott is expected to be the call up. He will be one exciting kid to watch at camp and was the first of Goldman’s interviews today.

“Obviously my goal is to make the team. I’m going to come to camp and just work as hard as I can and just try to make a tough decision for the staff… I’m just going to do everything I can to show them that I deserve to stay.”

As you will hear, Varlamov had some trouble understanding a few questions. I was able to get in two questions, one which he understood and responded nicely, the second, however, not so much. Fortunately my good friend Peter Kiss, who covers the Avalanche for a newspaper in the Czech Republic, was able to translate the question, thus allowing Varlamov to answer with more ease.

I was very impressed with Varlamov’s calm demeanor during the press conference. Although there were less than 10 members of the media (Denver Post, Altitude, NHL.com and myself), he still displayed some anxiety and nerves. But he had a smile on his face the whole time and worked extremely hard to comprehend all of the questions and answer them to the best of his ability.

Please check back later today for an article on what I feel Varlamov needs to accomplish in order to be successful this upcoming season in an Avalanche jersey. There are also a couple of steps the Avalanche can take as an organization to support Varlamov’s development between now and September.

For myself, I am excited to have such a high-skilled young netminder in Colorado. Although I didn’t get a chance to speak with him privately, I learned a lot about his demeanor and personality and I think he’s going to embrace this opportunity and have a very successful off-season of training.

There are also two very special guest appearances on the program. The first is former Colorado Avalanche forward Shjon Podein. Podein played in 699 NHL games, including four seasons with the Avalanche and finished his career with 100 goals, 106 assists and 439 penalty minutes. He called in to talk winning the Stanley Cup, wearing his gear for 25 straight hours, and more.

Podein now runs Team 25: The Shjon Podein Children’s Foundation, which is dedicated to improving quality of life for children with illness while also providing a community of support. He is also on Twitter.

Former Avalanche forward and current Columbus Blue Jackets assistant coach Dan Hinote also joined the program. Hinote played in 503 NHL games, including five and a half seasons with the Avs. Through hard work and passion he earned every one of his 38 goals and 52 assists and was considered a leader, the heart and soul of his team. Hinote discussed roles on the Avalanche, coaching the Blue Jackets, and becoming a friend with benefits of the program.

Last week’s episode of Avalanche Weekly is finally live, just in time for you to catch up before tomorrow’s episode.

This show features a plethora of information. Recorded the night before the trade deadline, listeners now have the knowledge to laugh at the trade speculation that is frequent throughout the show. Dan, Justin, and Derek are joined by special guest Bill Ranford, who is more than happy to discuss winning the Stanley Cup, the Disney film Miracle, filling his time during retirement, goalie coaching, and what it’s like being traded.

Ranford is a former NHL goaltender who played for the Edmonton Oilers and the Washington Capitals among other teams during nearly an 18 year career. He finished with a 240-279-76 record and a 3.41 lifetime goals against average and .888 lifetime save percentage.

The guys also discussed the recent Avalanche trades, including the Craig Anderson trade in depth, the potential for trading John-Michael Liles, the recent Avalanche struggles, Sidney Crosby, concussions, teams still in playoff contention, the trade of Brad Boyes, and even the future of Colorado’s goaltending.

Among the topics discussed were future goaltending prospects, free agent goalies, and possible reasons behind such a shocking move by the Burgundy Boys.

TG1P was also blessed with a very special guest, Adrian Dater from The Denver Post. Dater also chimed in about the Anderson situation, showing the same amount of surprise for the move as most anyone else. He also graciously deliberated future trade options, of which he was on the money and Ryan was way off. Peter Forsberg and the old days of hockey reporting were also discussed  in a stellar conversation about your Colorado Avalanche.

Well, I sure saw this coming from a mile away. Craig Anderson, who displayed many different signs of frustration over the last few months, was traded to the Ottawa Senators for Brian Elliott this morning. On the surface, the Avalanche get a well-rounded and technically sound butterfly goaltender with a strong work ethic and an upbeat attitude. The Senators get a big goaltender with the ability to be a solid workhorse, meaning he could fetch a decent contract to be their starter next season.

I hope some of you took the time to read the post I wrote yesterday on Anderson’s struggles here in Colorado. I think it points to a lot of the reasons why he was finally shipped to another team. Simply put, he didn’t seem happy at all being in this situation. I think he was unhappy with some of the coaching decisions, unhappy with the lack of support, and extremely frustrated with his own lack of success. It became a downward spiral of sorts, and a trade was made.

To me, the Avalanche benefit from this deal for a couple of reasons. First of all, Anderson was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. So for them to find a willing trade partner and get another quality, well-rounded goalie in return, is much better than just letting him walk and getting nothing in return.

Second of all, Elliott is a very capable goalie that I think will create a healthy competition between he and Peter Budaj. This is a great situation for a young team, as the chemistry and competitiveness forces both goalies to work even harder in practices and in games on a day-to-day basis. That’s already a huge benefit that the Avalanche get with this trade.

For the Senators, they get a big goaltender that is capable of being a workhorse and will thrive in a new situation. Anderson brings some intimidation to the crease and if he can revive his intensity and work ethic, this will also be a huge win for the Senators. Health might be a concern since Anderson has struggled to regain his form from last season, but overall I think he’s the type of goalie that thrives on being desperate and unconventional, and therefore could be a great fit in Ottawa.

Overall, I look at this trade as a win-win situation for both teams. The Avalanche move a guy who was clearly unhappy and receive an upbeat and capable goaltender in return. The Senators get a bigger goaltender that is capable of logging heavy minutes and injecting the team with some attitude and intensity. He’ll be “the man” in Ottawa, that’s for sure.

In fact, I am kind of reminded of Ray Emery’s time in Ottawa. He was a big goalie that logged heavy minutes and brought a fierce attitude to the crease. And it was a very positive situation for that team at that time. If you look at Anderson’s impact on the Avalanche last season, then relate it to what Emery brought to Ottawa, there are a lot of similarities in that regard.

So again, I think Anderson was definitely a victim of some very frustrating circumstances here in Colorado. He was simply not happy. I can only speculate on things like clashing with the coaching staff and needing to take a personal leave for a few days. But in the end, his demeanor, his body language and his overall lack of a strong work ethic (compared to last season) really showed. And because of that, I think he really wanted a change.

Please find my Audio Report below for last night’s 3-2 OT loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I thought the Avalanche did many right things in this game, especially their ability to sustain a physical presence in the first period. Mark Olver brought great energy to the lineup, Ryan Wilson was very physical and Peter Budaj gave the Avs a chance to win.

+ Congratulations to Cameron Gaunce for scoring his first career NHL goal as well. His deceptive floating wrist shot from inside the blue line gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead in the second period. He finished with 15:39 TOI in 21 shifts, one shot and one goal, two hits and two blocked shots. He became the sixth Avalanche player to score his first NHL goal this year, joining Philippe Dupuis, David Liffiton, Kevin Shattenkirk, David Van Der Gulik and Greg Mauldin.

+ Mark Olver brought consistent energy despite being a -2 in 7:56 TOI. He had one hit, two shots and was 3-for-6 in the faceoff circle. Speaking of faceoffs, Paul Stastny was a beast in the circle. He won 15-of-22 faceoffs (68%) and the Avs won 54% of the faceoffs for the entire game. Stastny was a +2 with and assist, three shots, one hit and one takeaway.

+ I mentioned in the Audio Report the edge in hits Colorado had in the first period. The game ended with them holding a 32-25 edge. Ryan O’Byrne had four hits, Dupuis had 3, Brandon Yip had three, Ryan Wilson had four hits and a terrific fight with Nick Johnson and then Cody McLeod had three hits as well. The only player who didn’t register a hit for the Avs was John-Michael Liles.

+ Tons of positives to take from this game, it’s definitely a step in the right direction and something you can only hope they build on as they hit the road and head out to California. I think the worst of this slide is over. If they continue to bring that physical presence on the road, they will continue to create some good bounces and good luck and they’ll be winning games again in no time.

We think these will become a pretty popular aspect of our website and something that readers will look forward to hearing as time goes on.

Because 99-percent of my time is spend running and managing The Goalie Guild, I simply don’t have the time to write posts and articles on here anymore. With my radio show (Avalanche Weekly on Mile High Sports Radio) only getting two hours of air time a week on Sunday nights, I still have so much to say about Colorado Avalanche hockey. And I’m not afraid to say it.

Ryan Boulding has done an awesome job taking over the day-to-day duties here on The Avs Guild and I won’t be surprised if his role continues to increase as I continue to put more of my time and energy into The Goalie Guild. But this new Audio Report feature is a huge time-saver and therefore allows me to post insight and analysis, in quick five-minute audio segments, on things like game recaps, trades, player performances and much more.

A lot of my Audio Reports will be focused on – you guessed it – goaltending and scouting notes. But for today’s inaugural Audio Report, I wanted to discuss some of my thoughts on what the Avalanche need to do to turn things around. As you’ll hear below, things aren’t nearly as bad as they seem to be. So players (and fans) should try to block out all of the negative press and remember that all it takes is one big play, one big save, or one big goal to turn things around.

The playoffs might be way out of sight right now, but there’s plenty of hockey left to be played. And more importantly, the young core of players are learning a valuable experience on what it means to be a professional hockey player. If anything, this experience will only make them more consistent and confident next season…and ultimately, on a young team, that’s all that matters. So enjoy this new feature and check back tonight or tomorrow when we have an Audio Report up recapping tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins!

After a brief hiatus, Avalanche Weekly returns! This week’s episode is now available for live streaming and features two special guests.

The boys were joined on the phone this week by former Colorado Eagles forward Phil Crowe. Crowe played 54 games with the Eagles during the 2003-04 season after some up and down stints in the NHL. He finished his NHL career with 9 points and 73 penalty minutes in 94 professional contests.

The fun didn’t stop there though, as the boys also got to chat with Jake Schroeder, long time Kroenke Sports National Anthem singer and vocalist for the band Opie Gone Bad.

They also discussed a variety of topics including the downward spiral of the Avalanche and how it impacts the kids who are playing on the team, the St. Louis Blues, goalie fights and fighting in general, the appeal of hockey to a broader audience and Armstrong even makes a comment about the Mario Lemieux situation.

Episode three of the newest venture of the Avalanche Guild is now available.

This week, Ryan and Jonathon were joined by special guest Justin Goldman, who was gracious enough to discuss way too many topics about the Colorado Avalanche. In case you hadn’t heard, Peter Forsberg signed a contract for the rest of this season and many are wondering just what the impact of his return will be. With a recent rough patch pulling the team down the standings, it’s worth examining how the Avs handle adversity and if they do any team building to stay strong as a unit.

Jonas Holøs and Scott Hannan get some praise, as well as David Koci, who Ryan thinks deserves more ice time. The Sheriff played for the Avalanche across a six year period. He finished his career with 7 goals, 14 assist, 699 penalty minutes, and fought in 60 NHL bouts during his reign. After ringing in earlier to talk with Aaron Miller, one time fan favorite Parker called back to talk about fighting in the NHL, what it was like retiring, and he even lets slip his favorite hockey movie.

Avalanche Weekly was at it again this week, talking to former NHLers like nobody’s business. The second caller of the show was former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Ken Klee.

Klee only played 81 games for the Avalanche, accumulating 19 points and 68 penalty minutes. Klee played nine seasons with the Washington Capitals, and spent time the New Jersey Devils, Atlanta Thrashers, Anaheim Ducks and Phoenix Coyotes as well. His career spanned 934 games and he managed 195 points and 880 penalty minutes therein.

Klee talked about his time spent playing in Denver, what it was like to retire, his coaching experiences, the max he could bench press, and the NHL record he currently holds.

Avalanche Weekly was at it again this week, talking with special guest Aaron Milller.

Miller was a product of the move of Quebec Nordiques to Colorado and he played five and a half years with the Avalanche before moving on to the Los Angeles Kings and eventually the Vancouver Canucks. A career defenseman, Miller posted 25 goals, 94 assists in 677 NHL games. Add to that 12 points in 80 playoff games and Miller had a nice stint playing professional hockey.

Miller talked about his time now that he’s retired from hockey, moving to Colorado with the Nordiques, and he even took some questions from a special caller by the name of Scott “the Sheriff” Parker.

The boys were joined in studio this week by former Colorado Avalanche defenseman Rick Berry. Berry played 76 games with the Avalanche during his first two years in the NHL before heading off to the Pittsburgh Penguins and eventually the Washington Capitals. He finished his career with 15 points and 315 penalty minutes in 197 professional contests.

Berry wasn’t afraid to jump in and talk about Peter Budaj and Craig Anderson, Kevin Shattenkirk, Milan Hejduk, Carolina Hurricanes rookie Jeff Skinner, and the work it takes to survive in the NHL.

The boys also got to chat with Craig Conroy of the Calgary Flames about staying fresh in the NHL, fighting former Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy in training camp, various pranks and stories and the most fun he’s ever had playing hockey.
