The Colorado Avalanche announced the recall of goaltender Cedrick Desjardins today.

Starting goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere suffered a groin injury in the first period of last night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, forcing the Avalanche to bring up some relief to support Semyon Varlamov.

Desjardins has played 14 games for the Lake Erie Monsters, Colorado’s AHL affiliate. During that stretch he’s gone 8-5-1 with a 1.85 goals against average and a .941 save percentage. Signed during free agency, Desjardins has been solid for the Monsters but was recently sidelined with injury. He’s 1-1 in his two NHL chances and could easily find a longer stay in the NHL if Giguere remains out for a while. Avs support netminders typically don’t see ice time during call ups, so don’t be surprised if Desjardins doesn’t get to play.

The club also announced that forward TJ Galiardi has been placed on injured reserve following a torso injury suffered last night as well. He’s being replaced by Mark Olver, who has missed the majority of the season with a concussion. Olver has two goals and nine points for the Monsters in 15 games this season and was considered a lock for the team towards the end of last season.

Rookie defenseman Tyson Barrie was also reassigned to the Monsters today, lightening a defensive rotation that saw Ryan Wilson riding the pine a lot recently.
