The Colorado Avalanche have announced the signing of Milan Hejduk today.

“My family and I are very excited to continue my career here in Denver,” said Hejduk.  “I believe in this organization and our young players and look forward to helping the team in any way that I can.”

Hejduk has signed a one year contact that will carry him to the end of the 2011-12 season. Much like Joe Sakic and Adam Foote before him, Hejduk will likely bounce from year to year until he feels his career is complete.

That’s not to say it will be any time soon though, as the 35 year old Czech forward had an outstanding season with 22 goals and 34 assists across 71 games. Hejduk was also healthy for a majority of the season which is a good sign as he only played 56 games the year before and seemed plagued by back and knee injuries, both of which led to him skipping the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Hejduk has been a reliable mentor on this team and, with the retirement of Foote, Hejduk’s veteran presence and calm offensive game will be important to pass on to the next generation coming up through the ranks. After all, the guy has 11 straight seasons with 20 goals and that has to rub off on someone.

“Milan has been a big part of our organization throughout the past 12 seasons,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He’s been one of the top goal scorers in the NHL over the last decade and we look forward to having him back next season.”

Hejduk is the first of his teammates to renew a contract with the Avs. The Denver Post is reporting Hejduk’s contract to be worth $2.6 million before performance incentives.

What do you think? Excited to see Hejduk return?
